Isolation and Disconnection: Shifting Our Perspective on Addiction

 
 

There are a lot of misconceptions and misinformation about addiction, individuals struggling with addiction, drugs and drug users. But really, “addiction is just one symptom of the crisis of disconnection.”

Addiction is particularly prevalent in LGBTQ+ communities due to a variety of reasons including, but not limited to: familial rejection, romantic rejection, cultural stigma and discrimination, internalized homophobia and transphobia, poverty, job insecurity and violence. Vilifying and criminalizing addiction only serves to increase disconnection and addiction. Instead increasing empathy, understanding, love, and support is one albeit important step towards healing addiction.
